The Old Spice commercial where the man is incensed because the woman in his life keeps using his body wash hits a chord with Frederick entrepreneur Javier Folgar, founder of TOA Waters, a line of bath products that, he says, “breaks social stigma.” Who says that men can’t enjoy soaking in a tub filled with bubbles or that women only want to smell sweet as a daisy? “That’s silly,” he says.
Folgar says he has always been a fan of the tub, a place where you can soak away the stresses of life, clear your mind and nourish your skin. The products created in his basement are pure inspiration, based on factors such as his love of hiking and the outdoors or a memory of a favorite place. “I have an idea and then I start playing around with it,” he says.
The ingredients are free of harmful chemicals and naturally derived, he says—think sage, oakmoss and lavender which make up his favorite combination called Lockwood Forest. Sweet Temptation blends dark cocoa and tobacco, along with musk and spice. Whole milk, an ingredient embraced centuries ago by Cleopatra, enriches the bath elixir to make skin smooth.
Folgar, whose day job is working for a conservation nonprofit, is pleased with the splash made by his new business. “I’m already coming up with the next line,” he says. And just as comforting as a bubble bath is the company’s community outreach, including a recent partnership with the Maryland Food Bank to address hunger.
