For years, improvementsalong the Golden Mile have given a new polish to whatwas once the retail epicenter of Frederick County. Streetscape enhancements and new businesses like the Warehouse Cinemas (which will open once gathering restrictions have lifted) are restoring at least some of U.S. 40’s former glory.

The latest improvement is called, “Golden Mile—In Focus,” a public art project in which large portrait photographs are being installed on building exteriors togive voice to local residents and promote the thoroughfare as a cultural and economic base. The project is a collaboration between the Frederick Arts Council and renowned photographer Wing Young Huie.

The images, which appear on the following pages, carry messages of living, community and hope.
